By combining computer technology with proven prevention science, the HeadOn: Making Good Choices program offers an innovative approach to developing communication, decision making, and drug refusal skills while boosting your child's self-confidence and self-esteem.
The development and evaluation of HeadOn was supported by a Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA).
An evaluation conducted with youth demonstrated that the program produced significant increases in knowledge about the topics covered in the program, including knowledge shown to serve as a protective factor against substance abuse and other high-risk behaviors.
The percentage change in accurate knowledge increased to an average of 97% after the HeadOn intervention, up from about 60% at baseline. Youth participating in the study rated the program highly useful, relevant, and easy to use. They found the program to be interesting and most of all, fun.
The program will work with most web browsers (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Netscape, Safari), both on a Windows PC or a Mac. You need to have, at least, version 7 of Adobe's Flash plugin. Most systems have the plugin already installed. If you need to install it, you can download it from Adobe's website
